Creating a Healthier Future: How these Seven Pillars Can Empower Your Well-being

I wanted to improve my health and well-being but just wasn’t sure where or how to start. Health for me isn't just about being free of disease, it's about feeling good and healthy in all aspects of my life.  I thought I would take the Seven Pillars of Health and Wellness and use them as my guide.  No sense in reinventing the wheel.  These pillars are time tested and like Tony Robbins said “Success leaves clues.”

So here is my breakdown of the Seven Pillars of Health and Wellness, what they mean to me and how I am going to try to improve each area of my life:

1.    Physical health: I’m going to focus on eating a more healthy diet, exercising regularly, and getting more quality sleep. I’ve already started swapping out fast food, soft drinks and unhealthy snacks for fruits, vegetables, lean meats, fish, and whole grains. I’m trying to get at least 30-45 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise daily and am prioritizing getting better sleep each night.

2.    Mental health: In order to manage stress, cope with anxiety and depression, and maintain a positive outlook on life, I’m learning to say "no" to things and to set aside some quiet time for prayer and meditation. I know getting regular exercise will also help with my stress management.

3.    Emotional health: Expressing my emotions in a healthy way can sometimes be rough for me.  I need to work on managing my emotions, and on my self-esteem. I am considering seeking the help of a grief therapist that specializes in PTSD and Complicated Grief.

4.    Social health: I know that having a strong relationship with family and friends as well as being involved in my community will make me feel connected so making time for socializing and seeking out opportunities to meet new people is number one on my list!

5.    Spiritual health: For me, spiritual health is tied to having a strong relationship with God.  I will admit, as everything was happening, my faith took a big hit. I know God didn’t leave me; I just need to find my way back.  I am also at a loss as to my purpose in life.  I always thought it would be my job (purpose) to take care of my family but in the blink of an eye, they were gone.  Now, I need to find the new meaning of life, knowing that God will be with me on this leg of the journey as well.  Regular practices like prayer, meditation have always been helpful at centering me.

6.    Environmental health: I believe in living in a clean environment.  Whether it is making sure my home and car is clean, and always being mindful of my impact on the planet, such as recycling and conserving energy.

7.    Occupational health: To have a career that I enjoy. One that makes me feel fulfilled, and to have a healthy work-life balance. Making sure I have enough time for both work and personal activities.

Improving your health and wellness doesn't have to be difficult. By focusing on these Seven Pillars, I know I can take steps to live a happier and healthier life.

So how do I eat an elephant?  One bite at a time.  I’m going to start with small changes in my daily routine, like going for a short walk in the morning, giving up chips with my sandwich and have carrots or celery sticks instead, set up a fun night out or a day at the beach to relax and socialize. I am also giving myself the grace to understand that I am not meant to do this perfectly.

I know there will be days where I choose to just be in the moment and have fun but by committing to these changes (most of the time), I'll be well on my way to a healthier, happier me!
